I’m only asking because that’s how I felt for a long time after my parents passed away from fever, leaving their fourteen-year-old son to learn from experience how to run this castle and estate.” He clasped his hands together. “So many people die during these times of war, but when a tragedy befalls those who are closest to us, it marks us for life, doesn’t it?”

Erica offered a deep sigh and fumbled for a reply. How often had she imagined her parents’ fear and despair as they fought against the forces of nature, clinging to their only child, praying for help? “I’m sure your father taught you well,” she said. “But you must have had some help…a mentor perhaps…someone who guided you through how to take care of your inheritance.”
