Today I'm the next stop on the tour for Anya Silverthorne's debut novel The Baroness of New York. She has kindly provided a guest post in which she explains why one of the minor characters in the novel was created. I always enjoy this type of revelation and hope you enjoy reading about the "birth" of Sophie as much as I did.

Synopsis
Baroness Adele von Mueller learns the sweetest love is forbidden....
Baroness Adele von Mueller
It's 1903 and free-spirited 18-year-old Baroness Adele von Mueller has just arrived to live with her spinster aunt in New York City. After a previous impropriety tarnishes her reputation with the German nobility, her father sends her overseas to give her one last chance to marry into money and save the family's name. Instead, Adele finds herself falling for charming and wickedly handsome Nick Mason, the foreman of a paper factory, who is as gorgeous as he is poor. As family secrets are revealed, Adele learns there's much more riding on her marrying wealthy than just keeping the family's name...
Nick Mason
Nick Mason has a habit of falling in love with every girl he sees. An orphan, former newspaper seller and now a foreman at a paper mill, he's nursing a bruised heart after being dumped by a laundry girl. But when he meets Baroness Adele disguised on a night out as a maid in her family's house, he knows right away there's something different about her. Once she reveals her true identity, he's even more intrigued. Nick has fallen for white women before, but never one so wealthy, and never one he knew he couldn't live without. With most people firmly against their love, he must visit her in secrecy to make their romance blossom.
Nick and Adele must stand up to a society and a family that won't accept their love for what it is: true and enduring. Can they withstand the storm, or will they be forced apart by a deck that's stacked against them in this steamy Victorian romance?
This historical interracial romance/Victorian romance novel marks Anya Silverthorne's debut.

Guest Post: Finding Sophie
I’ve been open with the fact that The Baroness of New York was started as a fanfic. Not only that, but the fanfic has been going with myself and a few friends for several years…since 2001 or 2002 to be exact. I used to write about Adele and Nick and their friends (hint hint!) on my old desktop computer with the huge rectangular monitor…often using AOL IM.
All of the characters in the book are from those fanfiction and Internet role-playing sessions, except for Sophie. While you can say many of the characters are originals, as in they weren’t part of the film, Sophie is completely new to the mix—coming in a good 16 or 17 years later and fitting into her role seamlessly.
I hadn’t focused too much on how Adele and Nick met when I was younger and exploring their story. Writing about their exploits and what they got up to together was definitely much more fun.
I did write a story that had them meeting when he bumped into her while selling papers and she asked him to come to the house to deliver personally to her family. While that might have worked when I didn’t care as much about the authenticity of the story, but now I’m aware that a lady of the house wouldn’t allow her niece to accept deliveries, especially from random strangers.
So, I needed a way for them to meet. And Sophie was “born” into the story. Not only did she provide a vehicle for Adele to meet her beau, but Sophie also gave us tremendous insight into the world of a first generation American with immigrant parents. Not only that, but she also represents the family’s very American struggle of their daughter deciding to do something “daring” and date outside of her religion, which was very frowned upon at the time.
At first, Sophie was just supposed to be a vehicle to get Adele to meet Nick, but gradually she became must more interesting. She’s funny, and full of life, and willing to do anything for her friends—which kind of surprised me a bit. And as a writer, I really like when my characters surprise me. It’s as though they have their own story and are simply allowing me to put pen to paper for them.
While Sophie isn’t the main character in this series, she’ll definitely be appearing in future series. I’ve also had requests to spin off a book about her and her beau; and who knows? That may be a possibility.
There’s a lot brewing when it comes to this world, so I’m excited for you to see the very beginnings of it.
