Synopsis

Finalist for the Amazon Storyteller Award 2017

Bosworth 1485: After victory against King Richard III, Henry Tudor becomes King of England. Rebels and pretenders plot to seize his throne. The barons resent his plans to curb their power and he wonders who he can trust. He hopes to unite Lancaster and York

through marriage to the beautiful Elizabeth of York.

With help from his mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, he learns to keep a fragile peace. He chooses a Spanish Princess, Catherine of Aragon, as a wife for his son Prince Arthur. His daughters will marry the King of Scotland and the son of the Emperor of Rome. It seems his prayers are answered, then disaster strikes and Henry must ensure the future of the Tudors.

My Thoughts

Henry, the final book in this wonderful trilogy, begins with the Battle of Bosworth (1485) and ends with Henry’s death (1509). For a man who never wanted to be King, Henry VII proved to be an excellent ruler and succeeded in his aim to pass on a peaceful and stable kingdom to his son.

This novel moves at a more sedate pace than the previous two novels, though it is a more emotional read. Family life is entwined with State affairs, revealing Henry VII’s love of his children and his wife, Elizabeth, while struggling with the demands of kingship.

Sadness permeates this novel as children die, loyal supporters succumb to old age or illness, including Henry's uncle, Jasper; and the greatest loss of all, the death of Elizabeth. Despite knowing these events were going to happen, they still tugged at the heart strings, as did the strained relationship between Henry and the future Henry VIII, not able to be reconciled even when Henry VII was on his deathbed.

I loved sweet, little Mary Tudor, the image of her mother, nursing Henry through one of his bouts of sickness. It was a very poignant moment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this the final novel and the trilogy overall. Tony Riches' style of writing and knowledge of the period made the three novels easy to read and very entertaining. While they can be read as standalone novels, the benefit of reading them all and in order gives a complete picture of the origins of this very interesting dynasty.
